As a specialist in internal medicine, cardiology and sports medicine, his research focuses on the effects of exercise on the heart in various populations from high-performance athletes up to patients with heart diseases. Further topics include the effects of sports and physical activity on primary and secondary prevention.
His previous clinical activities focused on sports medical and sports cardiological examinations for pre-participation screening in elite and recreational athletes, as well as on the evaluation of the exercise capacity and training prescription in patients with internal diseases.
Prof. Scharhag was responsible for the medical care of athletes at the Olympic training centers in Saarbrücken, Potsdam and Munich. Furthermore, he worked as team physician for various national teams during international competitions and training camps (currently for the U21 National Team of the German Football Association).
