New paper

Bernhard Guggenberger, a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Hans Kainz (University of Vienna) and Dr. Martin Svehlik (Medical University of Graz), has just published the second full-length paper from his PhD research in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research!

This study explores the impact of femoral version and tibial torsion on patellofemoral joint loading.

Key findings:

  • Excessive tibial torsion can destabilize the patellofemoral joint by increasing lateral loading.
  • Contrary to previous research, femoral version showed no correlation with patellofemoral loading.
  • When tibial torsion was ignored (as in past studies), earlier findings were replicated—highlighting the importance of considering the entire lower leg morphology in clinical assessments.
  • These insights could improve treatment strategies for patellofemoral instability, ensuring a more individualized approach to patient care!
