The regatta, whose origins date back to the 16th century, kicked off on Saturday with the preliminary rounds over 250 meters. In the morning, the team completed their first trial training session with the approximately 900 kg galley—an imposing wooden boat that weighs over 1.4 tons with rowers and is rowed with the arms. In the preliminary rounds, the Vienna team confidently qualified for the A final.
On Sunday, the grand final took place on the Grand Canal, with hundreds of spectators lining the route. At 6:30 p.m., the University of Vienna competed against the strong team from Pisa. After a fast start, a thrilling race developed over 750 meters, with Vienna keeping up for a long time and only falling back slightly in the last 350 meters. In the end, the Viennese finished second, just half a boat length behind – an outstanding result, especially since Pisa won for the first time in 21 years.
In addition to the sporting success, the special atmosphere remains unforgettable: the enthusiasm of the spectators, the hospitality of the Venetians, and the unique atmosphere within the team made the regatta a real highlight.
