The 29th annual congress of the DVS Section of Sport Pedagogy will be held in Frankfurt am Main from 26 Mai to 28 Mai 2016. The aim of this year's conference is to further elaborate on educational research, which constituts one main research area in the field of sport pedagogy.
Michael Kolb and Christoph Milleschitz will give a presentation on the social practices of the Viennese b-boying scene. B-boying represents one of the four components of the hip-hop youth culture and ideology. Participant observation, a qualitative ethnographic research method, was employed in order to investigate features of the so called freestyle culture, as it can be found in other freestyle sports like skateboarding or free running. Aim of this study was to investigate whether b-boying features similar characteristics as other freestyle sports. Analysis of the data set shows that b-boying can indeed be identified as another freestyle sport, in which music is assigned the central role.
